Exterior Painting in San Diego

The outside of a house takes sun, wind, damp air and, near the coast, salt. Ironwood Finishes paints stucco, siding, trim and doors with that in mind.

Good prep first. Then paint that is chosen for where you live.

What We Paint Outside

  • Stucco. Cleaned, patched and sealed where needed, then painted.
  • Siding and trim. Wood and other siding, fascia, eaves and window trim.
  • Doors, garage doors and gates. The pieces your neighbors see first.
  • Wood details. Stained or painted, whichever you prefer. See staining.

Prep Is Most of the Job

  1. We look at the whole exterior with you and note what needs repair.
  2. We clean the surface. Dirt, chalk and mildew come off. See pressure washing.
  3. We scrape loose paint, patch cracks and caulk gaps.
  4. We prime bare spots, then paint.

Paint only lasts as long as what is under it. That is why most of our attention goes to the steps before the first coat.

Paint for the Weather

  • Salt air. Near the water it can wear at a finish over time.
  • Sun. South and west walls fade and dry out first.
  • Moisture. Fog and damp can get behind paint and cause peeling and bubbles.
  • Wind. It carries grit and salt onto every surface.

Inland homes see less salt and more sun and dry heat. Either way, we pick products to fit your house and your location.

Exterior Painting Questions

How do I know it is time to repaint my house exterior?

Look for chalky residue when you rub the wall, peeling or bubbling paint, hairline cracks in stucco, and faded color on the sunniest walls. Any of these means the finish is wearing thin. There is no fixed schedule, so call (858) 333-2396 and we will look at your house and give a free estimate.

Can you paint over peeling paint?

Not directly. Loose paint has to come off first, or the new coat will peel right along with it. We scrape and sand the bad areas, clean the surface, repair what is damaged, and prime bare spots. Then the paint goes on. Prep like this is what makes a repaint last.

Do you also clean the house before painting?

Yes, cleaning is part of good prep. Dirt, chalking and mildew stop paint from bonding, so they have to go. We can pressure wash the surface and then check for repairs once it is clean and dry. Ask about it at your free estimate.
