Happy Halloween: Putting Up Halloween Decorations on Stucco

Happy Halloween from the Ironwood Finishes family. Porches are full of pumpkins, spiders and glowing lights tonight. If you are hanging Halloween decorations on stucco, skip nails and tape on the paint. Use existing hooks, railings, gutters and freestanding stands, and take everything down gently, so the walls look good when November comes.

A note for the day

Halloween is one of the friendliest nights of the year. Neighbors meet on the sidewalk, and kids show off costumes they planned for weeks. Keep the path to your door clear and well lit. Watch for little ones crossing the street at dusk, and have a safe, happy night.

Halloween decorations on stucco: what to avoid

Stucco is rough and hard, and the paint on it can chip at edges and corners. A few common habits cause damage:

  • Nails and staples: they crack stucco and leave holes that let water in.
  • Strong tape: packing tape and duct tape can pull paint off when they come down, and they leave sticky residue.
  • Spray-on cobwebs and fake snow: some leave stains on porous stucco that are hard to wash off.
  • Heavy items hung from light fixtures: fixtures are not made to carry extra weight.

Better ways to hang them

  • Use hooks, brackets and clips that are already on the house.
  • Tie lightweight garlands and lights to porch railings, posts and gutters with soft ties.
  • Use freestanding stands, shepherd’s hooks and planters for signs and lanterns.
  • Drape stretchy cobwebs over shrubs and railings instead of pressing them into the wall texture.
  • Keep battery candles and lights a little away from the wall, so they do not leave marks.

Our post on painting stucco explains why stucco paint needs a sound surface to last.

Taking decorations down

Take things down slowly. Cut ties instead of pulling. Lift tape at a low angle, and warm stubborn residue with a hair dryer before you peel it. Then brush loose cobweb strands off the wall with a soft broom. If you find a chip or a small crack, note it. Small spots are easy to touch up before the rainy season, when water can get into them.

Planning ahead for Halloween decorations on stucco

If you hang decorations every year, consider a few permanent hooks set into wood trim or fascia, where they do less harm than in the stucco itself. Christmas lights go up soon, and the same hooks can serve both holidays. Our exterior painting page covers stucco touch-ups and full repaints.

FAQ

Can I use tape to hang Halloween decorations on stucco?

Strong tape like packing or duct tape can pull paint off stucco and leave residue. Use existing hooks, railings, gutters and freestanding stands instead.

How do I remove fake cobwebs from stucco?

Brush loose strands off with a soft broom, working gently. Spray-on cobwebs can stain porous stucco, so test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

What should I do if decorations chipped my stucco paint?

Note the spot and have it touched up before the rainy season. Small chips and cracks can let water in if they are left open.
